Internet Speed Checker for NVDA

This addon allows you to quickly test your internet connection speed directly from your screen reader. Using the popular Speedtest.net infrastructure, it provides accurate measurements of your download and upload speeds, as well as your ping.

Features

• Simple Speed Test: Check your connection speed with a single keyboard shortcut.
• Live Progress Indicator: A series of medium-pitched beeps plays while the test is running, indicating that the process is ongoing.
• Comprehensive Results: Once completed, a detailed dialog box appears, displaying:
  • Download Speed (in Mbps)
  • Upload Speed (in Mbps)
  • Ping (in milliseconds)
  • Geographic Location of the test server
  • Your Internet Service Provider (ISP)
  • Your public IP Address
• User-Friendly Interface: The results are displayed in a focused, read-only text box, allowing you to review the data immediately. A close button is available to dismiss the dialog.

Using the Addon

Starting a Speed Test

1. Ensure you are connected to the internet.
2. Press the default keyboard shortcut: Control+Shift+NVDA+I.
3. NVDA will announce “Internet speed checking…”.
4. You will hear a beeping sound repeating every 0.7 seconds. This indicates the test is in progress.
5. When the test is complete:
   • The beeping will stop.
   • A high, long beep will play to signal the test has finished.
   • A dialog window will appear with the full results, and your cursor will be automatically placed inside the text box so you can start reading with your screen reader’s review commands (e.g., arrow keys, NVDA+DownArrow).

Interpreting the Results

The results dialog provides a clear breakdown of your connection’s performance:

• Download Speed: How fast data is transferred from the internet to your computer. This is crucial for streaming, browsing, and downloading files.
• Upload Speed: How fast data is transferred from your computer to the internet. This is important for video calls, sending emails with attachments, and uploading files.
• Ping: The latency of your connection, measured in milliseconds (ms). Lower numbers indicate a more responsive connection, which is vital for online gaming and real-time communication.
• Location: The city and country of the Speedtest.net server used for the test.
• ISP: The name of your internet service provider.
• Client IP: Your public IP address as seen by the internet.

Notes

• The test takes a few seconds to complete. Please wait for the beeping to stop and the final success beep before performing other actions.
• If the test fails, NVDA will announce an error message. This can happen due to temporary network issues or if the Speedtest.net service is unavailable. You can try running the test again later.
• The test server is automatically selected to be the closest available server for the most relevant result.
